From the article:

Accidental house fires remain a serious safety threat to homeowners, renters and their families. Each year, roughly 3,400 people are killed in home fires or by burn injuries, making them the third-most-common cause of accidental deaths at home. Eight out of 10 fire-related deaths occur at home ??? the place that is the very embodiment of comfort and security.

“Unfortunately, people often think an accident is something that is inevitable,” says Meri-K Appy, president of the Home Safety Council. “But we know that almost every accident is preventable.” In an interview with U.S. News & World Report, Appy outlined the most common ways that home fires ignite and provided a list of simple steps homeowners can take to prevent them.

Cooking
Fire safety starts in the kitchen. Cooking ??? particularly stove-top cooking ??? represents the leading cause of home fires. Many such fires occur after residents put something on the stove but become distracted and forget about it. “They lose track of it, and then before they know it, the fire is very large,” Appy says.

Solution: Stand by your pan
Because cooking causes so many home fires, it’s essential to give anything that’s on top of your stove your undivided attention. “I sometimes make a joke about the Tammy Wynette song ???Stand by Your Man???: ‘Stand by your pan,'” Appy says. “If you have to leave [the kitchen], turn the heat off [the burner] before you answer the phone or leave the room.”

Electrical
Faulty or deteriorating electrical cords are another top cause of home fires. Cords that become frayed or cracked can send sparks to flammable surfaces and start a fire.

Solution: Cord checkup
Check all of your electrical cords to ensure that they are in good shape, and replace any that are worn out. In addition, “make sure you are not overloading circuits,” Appy says. “It should be one plug per receptacle ??? you don’t want that octopus thing going on.”

Home Maintenance Tips for Summer
Summer brings sunshine, green leaves, and trips to the beach. But the warm, dry season also offers the perfect chance to get some work done around the house. With just a few weekends’ worth of work, these tips can help get your home in tip-top shape and ready for the rest of the year.

Easy Home Fixes in the Summer
When it gets warm, it’s tempting to ditch any housework for the beach or the golf course. Hard as it may be, consider suppressing that urge for a few weekends, because some fairly easy work can improve the state of your home, give it an appearance makeover, and even save you some money.

Keep Your Cool With a Fan
There’s an easy trick to keeping cooler and saving money, and it’s as close as your ceiling fan. Switch the ceiling fan’s blades so the leading edge is higher as the fan turns, so you can feel the breeze from the fan as it rotates. This simple action will push cool air down, enabling you to set the air-conditioning lower and save money on energy.

Clean Your Dryer Vent
Without some maintenance, your dryer could cause a house fire. The U.S. Fire Administration reports nearly 16,000 dryer fires occur annually, which happen largely because dryers’ vents get clogged with lint and dust.

Thankfully, you can avoid any unnecessary dryer-caused danger with a few simple steps.
First, (if your dryer is on an outside wall with a short hose) you’ll need a vent-cleaning brush kit, which can clean your dryer vent tubing more thoroughly than a vacuum cleaner can. Begin by cleaning the dryer’s lint trap housing with a smaller brush to remove as much lint and dust as possible. Then disconnect the dryer duct from the dryer and the wall for a thorough cleaning. Also use a brush to clean the vent on the outside of the house to keep both ends clean and free of lint.

From the article:

Summer is here! Time to spend your days outside. If you are like me, you will be out gardening. This year I am working on two gardens. The first is my patio garden in which I grow my vegetables in containers & pots. The second is in my parents’ yard which is more of a family effort. I love doing both. Working on my own patio garden means I get to come up with my own garden projects and make it my own. Working with my sister and mother on the yard garden means I get to see their ideas and see our creativity work together.

In this post I put together a few simple garden projects that you can easily do with your own garden, be it a normal yard garden or a patio garden.

Cement Block Planter
All I used was two cement blocks, tape, plastic liner with holes, soil, and flowers. I taped a plastic liner (a bag that held grocery store grapes) inside the holes of one block. Filled the holes with soil. Added these flowers. and Voila! How simple is that?

Antique Containers for a Flower Bed
My mother is a antique collector. She has so many great pieces in the house and in the garden as well. I love using unique containers for veggies and plants a like.

Have Water Damaged Drywall? Learn How to Fix it Here!

People are surprised how little water it takes to damage drywall. If you have damaged drywall due to water then you’ve come to the right place.

We found this article in the Washington Post that describes how to repair the drywall and avoid mold damage.

From the article:

Repairing water-damaged drywall is not too hard. Ceilings will present the most difficulty if you’re not a professional. Working over your head is not easy, and getting the repair to blend in with the rest of the ceiling will be tough to achieve if you’re not highly experienced at finishing drywall.

It’s best to try to cut out the wet drywall as soon as possible so that you minimize any mold growth. Mold spores are hidden in the typical ceiling; the temperature is perfect, and they have food. The only ingredient missing was water, and now that’s present. Mold can bloom within days if you don’t act.

Be sure to wear goggles or other eye protection as you remove the damaged drywall. The last thing you need right now is a scratched cornea from a nugget of gypsum falling into your eye.

One of the biggest challenges in getting the ceiling ready for a new piece of drywall is cutting back the water-soaked drywall to the center of one of the ceiling joists. This is accomplished with any number of tools, from a sharp razor knife to a reciprocating saw held at a low angle so the blade just cuts into the drywall and not the wood joist.

You can also cut to the side of a joist and then nail on a scab or sister 2-by-2 that will be the lath catcher for the new drywall. Just be sure the bottom of the framing material is flush with the bottom of the existing joist. If it’s lower, you’ll end up with an unsightly hump in the ceiling.
