From the article:

Every man needs a room to themselves, and these man-cave must haves are the perfect way to fill up those macho rec-rooms. Still unsure about that man-cave, Merriam-Webster just entered man-cave as a recent addition into the English language, and if it is in a dictionary, it has to be legitimate.

One of the essentials to any man-cave is a personal bar. From personal draft beer dispensers to score-keeping booze sleeves, these alcohol-assisters will make the booze go down that much smoother.

A false assumption many would make about a man-cave is that it does not need decorating, yet this is completely false. Filling a room with manly movember movie prints, skateboard furniture, geeky 8-bit aquariums and weaponry decor will not only appease the eyes, but make the space much more enjoyable for all visitors.

Finally, no man-cave is complete without games, from eye-controlled arcade games to convertible foosball tables, these recreational activities will keep men busy for hours. And, if men truly want to make a luxurious space that will be the talk of the town, they just need to spend money on some touchscreen Texas Hold ???Em tables and $100,000 pool tables.

Use this list of man-cave must haves and guys may never leave the space again, especially if there are bromantically scented candles to kill any bad odors.

From the article:

According to a new working paper from Harvard Business School, setting aside 15 minutes to write at the end of the workday is enough to make you better at your job.

???When people have the opportunity to reflect, they experience a boost in self-efficacy,??? says HBS professor Francesca Gino. ???They feel more confident that they can achieve things. As a result, they put more effort into what they???re doing and what they learn.???

In a series of laboratory and field experiments, Gino and her colleagues found that reflection leads to better performance. The most telling example comes from their field experiment with an Indian outsourcing company called Wipro.

The researchers put new employees into groups where people either reflected on their days or didn???t. In the reflection group, employees were given a paper journal and asked to spend 15 minutes at the end of their workdays writing about what went well that day, which they did for 10 days.

The result: The journaling employees had 22.8% higher performance than the control group.

???In the field study, we were asking people to work less,??? Gino says. ???It???s counterintuitive, because you think you want to use those 15 minutes to keep working, but it actually leads to performance.???

The study sprang from the experiences Gino and her colleagues have had as instructors. After each class she teaches, she takes time to debrief, noting the comments students made and what points of hers led to quality discussions. She then folds those insights into the next class she teaches.

From the article:

From unfolding apartments to clever remodels to creative rentals, these 10 tiny kitchens show that their owners and designers haven’t just learned to deal with small spaces ??? they’ve embraced them. With solutions including cutting boards on drawers for extra counter space, affordable alternatives to wallpaper and innovative storage, these small kitchens can’t help but inspire.

A Tiny, Makeshift Bakery
Homeowner: Yossy Arefi-Afshar of New York City

Yossy Arefi-Afshar loves to bake, and refuses to let her tiny New York kitchen stop her. Although she’s learned some hard lessons about planning along the way (“I’ll never forget the time I got too ambitious with my menu and ended up doing dishes in the bathtub the next day,” she says), she’s learned to work with what she’s got.

When Arefi-Afshar is working on a big baking project, she simply clears everything off the counters and moves it to another part of the apartment. For some extra surface area, she’ll pull out a drawer or two and place a sheet pan or cutting board on top.

A Food Blogger’s Brooklyn Rental
Homeowner: Cara Eisenpress of Brooklyn, New York

A rental kitchen isn’t just limited in size, it’s limited in style too. Food blogger Cara Eisenpress uses cute art and her prettiest canning experiments to add color and interest to her tiny Brooklyn kitchen.

A huge part of keeping a small kitchen tidy is prioritizing belongings. Not everything could fit in her kitchen at first, so the most used items were kept on hand. On the other side of the kitchen, a wall-mounted wine rack and tall bookshelves take advantage of wall space for storage. A small setup seats four people for a casual meal.

Curious Where the Largest Homes in the US Are? It’s Probably Not Where You Think!

It’s always interesting to look inside large homes. It can be fun to see how the other half lives and also get ideas to incorporate into our own homes. In order to help you out we found this article about where the largest homes in America are. We bet you’ll be as surprised as we were as to where they are!

From the article:

If you had to name where America’s biggest homes were, just off the top of your head, where would you pick? Hollywood, maybe. Or New York City, perhaps, or maybe Silicon Valley, where tech entrepreneurs have sprawling mansions.

But that’s not where the very biggest US homes are. The biggest US homes (as measured by the number of rooms) can in fact be found in Tennessee and the Washington, DC area.

The data, compiled on data visualization blog Vizual Statistix, shows that Williamson County, Tennessee and Stafford County, Virginia, have the highest median number of rooms per housing unit, at 7.5 (not counting bathrooms, which the Census doesn’t include in its room counts). Not surprisingly, those counties also have money ??? Williamson County has a median household income that’s more than double that of the entire state of Tennessee’s. Likewise, Stafford County (along with several others in the Washington, DC, area) is one of the highest-income areas in the country.

Not that income has everything to do with it. Kalawao County in Hawaii, once home to a leper colony, is currently home to only 90 people, making it one of the tiniest counties in the nation. Those residents that remain may simply have some very modest dwellings, bringing the county’s median down to 3.1 rooms per home. Likewise, New York County (a.k.a. Manhattan) has the third-smallest number of median rooms, which may simply be a function of having lots of small apartments.

Even if you live in a place with relatively modest homes, you might see houses in your area getting more and more spacious. New American homes are growing larger all the time, both in terms of rooms and square footage. As of the early 1980s, only 18 percent of new single-family American homes had 4 bedrooms or more. Today, it’s 41 percent.

From the article:

Unlike a front entry, seen by all and used by guests, the mudroom is usually a home’s secondary entrance. It’s one of those rooms that many older homes don’t have, and many of us pine for. It’s a hardworking space ??? even the tiniest of mudrooms is helpful for keeping the house clean and organized and the family efficient. Here are some inspiring spaces that showcase the elements of an efficient mudroom.

1. Hooks & Racks: Coats, hats, scarves, umbrellas, they all need somewhere to hang. If you don’t have a mudroom and want to start small, you could simply add a row of hooks. You could even do multiple rows to maximize your wall space.

2. Bench: Next on the the mudroom checklist would be a bench. When coming home, the first thing you want to do before entering the rest of your house is sit down and take off your shoes. Make your bench do double-duty by putting a boot tray underneath, or using a bench with a flip-up seat for extra concealed storage.

3. Cubbies or Lockers: The ultimate mudroom feature is a set of open cubbies or lockers. Have one for each member of your family so everyone has their own designated storage space. Provide low storage for shoes, hooks for coats, and high storage for seasonal items.

From the article:

I???ve never made homemade laundry detergent. Oh, it???s been on my {too} long to-do list of things I eventually want to try my hand at making. But much like homemade toothpaste, I just haven???t gotten there yet.

(It???s probably because I???m pretty satisfied with the natural and eco-friendly detergent I am already using!)

I have, however, been collecting homemade laundry detergent recipes and pinning them to my ???For the Home??? board on Pinterest. Maybe one of these day I???ll get around to making these.

In the meantime, you can try one of these homemade laundry detergent recipes and tell me what you think:

DIY Powdered Soap Nuts
This recipes from Eco-Friendly Family looks phenomenal. I have tried soap nuts a few times and still have some leftover from my last Jenuinely Pure review. I love that they are 100 percent natural!

This recipe is unique from other homemade detergent recipes in that it appears to be cloth-diaper safe! (In my eBook, I recommend staying away from many homemade detergents because those that use soaps like Fels Naptha or Ivory can leave residue on your cloth diapers.)
