Dogs and cats enrich our lives in so many ways, bringing companionship, joy, and humor along with their wagging tails and content purrs. But sometimes our pets??? accessory items leave little to be desired when it comes to size, space, and style. Here are some creative ideas for incorporating dog and cat bowls, beds, and more into your home d??cor.

Built-In
Not everyone has the luxury, budget, or space to include a special area for the family pet during a remodel or new construction, but if you do, you might consider one of these ideas.

A nook at the end of an island is the perfect place to house your dog???s food and water bowls out of busy kitchen traffic. (Note elevated bowls aren???t appropriate for all dogs, so set yours on the floor if your vet so advises.)

Speaking of pet food, we love this smart built-in bin for storing pet food.

Rethinking
Repurposing or reworking an existing area or piece of furniture is likely a more doable option for most families. Here are some interesting ways to create dedicated spaces for your dog or cat in your home.

This kennel transforms an everyday dog crate into a pretty piece of furniture.

A pleated fabric skirt attached to the underside of this bedside table with hook-and-loop tape hides a dog crate beautifully.

From the article:

Moving into your new dream house can be a daunting task. Between unpacking, cleaning and trying to find that stray roll of toilet paper, it may feel like you have lost your mind in a sea of bubble wrap. That is why I wanted to share with you five simple things that you should do that first month of living in your new home. These items may feel like back burner tasks but really, they will help you sleep better at night in your new abode and make you feel like your new place is less like a new house and more like your new home. When we moved into our dream house, we were tired, overwhelmed and couldn???t remember where we put the sippy cups for our 10 month old son???and we had no idea what to do first. Of course, we cleaned and unpacked???.but what next? This handful of to-dos walks you through each of those tasks and why it should be done first and foremost.

Let???s get to it!

LOCK IT UP
Security is the number one concern of most people in a new environment. You can easily switch out your locks and deadbolts to your new home to protect your valuables, your family and of course, yourself. Now is the time to consider the finish and the options are endless! When it comes to exterior locks, make sure you choose something that looks timeless and can be cleaned easily. A new security system is also a good idea. The options for this are endless as well. Systems with online monitoring, iPhone compatibility, thermostat control and even video monitors for the interior as well as your baby nursery are super helpful. Even if the room is empty now, it won???t be in the future ??? so go ahead and secure it!

REMOVE TOILET SEATS
Some folks may think it???s unnecessary to replace toilet seats but my point here is to simply remove them. By removing your toilet seats, you will be able to really deep clean under the bolts and hinges where the ???yucks??? like to hide. Your goal is to make sure your royal throne is YOU-worthy. After a thorough scrubbing, you can reinstall your existing seat or choose to shop for a new one (new versions with night lights, padding or even child sized attachments are now available!) and either way you will know your favorite seat in the house is ready for your entire family.

IMPROVE YOUR HOME AIR
Changing an air filter is really a three minute task but it should be done immediately after moving into a new home. Even if the previous owners swear the chore was just done, changing out a filter can help improve the performance of your air conditioning and furnace units and help with any allergies in the home. This inexpensive fix can also save you money! The US Department of Energy says that replacing your dirty air filter with a new one can lower your A/C???s energy consumption by 5-10%. It???s a good idea to write directly on the filter when you put it in so that you can be sure to know how long it???s been since the last change. Also, take the time to test and change out batteries in all your smoke alarms and monoxide detectors. These are often tested during inspections but the batteries can die or tampered units are common especially if a house is left vacant.

From the article:

Surveillance isn???t just for TV cops on a stakeout. Cameras also help keep homes, families and businesses safe and secure. This article will help you figure out which type of security camera will best suit your needs.

Security and Surveillance
If your goal is to protect a home or business by keeping tabs on what’s going on inside and out, there are several types of camera you may consider:

Bullet cameras: These are the familiar, cylindrical cameras we see everywhere. A bullet camera may resemble a tube of lipstick, though some more robust models are the size of a soda can. These are great if you know exactly where you want camera coverage; they can be wall-mounted and left to do their work.

Dome cameras: These are the ceiling-mounted ???eye in the sky??? type security cameras. Some are fixed in place, others can be remotely controlled to pan, tilt and zoom in for a closer look.

Live streaming cameras: Ideal for remote, unmanned monitoring. These cameras can sit on a piece of furniture, and are designed to feed a signal directly to a computer or mobile device for live viewing. Some can also pan, tilt and scan by remote control.

Hidden cameras: If you???re really trying to catch someone who???s up to no good, you don???t want them to know they???re being watched. These cameras are designed to look like something else, so troublemakers are none the wiser.

Wireless cameras: Plug-and-play wireless cameras have become very popular, as they are easily integrated into existing home automation schemes. The Nest Cam, Arlo and Samsung SmartThings are good examples.

Living color
In some cases, color images can be invaluable. An accurate description of an intruder???s clothing or the color of the car that sideswiped your motorcycle may be exactly what the authorities need to crack the case. Color cameras are most effective in well-lighted areas; as a general rule, a black-and-white camera will offer superior low-light imaging at higher resolution for less money. Carefully consider the benefits of each for your specific situation when choosing a security camera.

Track anything that moves
You may not want a camera running non-stop around your home. Some security cameras are able to detect movement and self-activate. You may end up with fifty short films about your restless cat, but wouldn???t you rather be absolutely sure? A camera with a memory buffer will constantly record a few seconds of video, so that nothing is missed in the moments before the motion sensor is triggered.

Looking for Simple Ways to Prevent a Fire in Your Home? Check Out These Ideas!

From the article:

Accidental house fires remain a serious safety threat to homeowners, renters and their families. Each year, roughly 3,400 people are killed in home fires or by burn injuries, making them the third-most-common cause of accidental deaths at home. Eight out of 10 fire-related deaths occur at home ??? the place that is the very embodiment of comfort and security.

“Unfortunately, people often think an accident is something that is inevitable,” says Meri-K Appy, president of the Home Safety Council. “But we know that almost every accident is preventable.” In an interview with U.S. News & World Report, Appy outlined the most common ways that home fires ignite and provided a list of simple steps homeowners can take to prevent them.

Cooking
Fire safety starts in the kitchen. Cooking ??? particularly stove-top cooking ??? represents the leading cause of home fires. Many such fires occur after residents put something on the stove but become distracted and forget about it. “They lose track of it, and then before they know it, the fire is very large,” Appy says.

Solution: Stand by your pan
Because cooking causes so many home fires, it’s essential to give anything that’s on top of your stove your undivided attention. “I sometimes make a joke about the Tammy Wynette song ???Stand by Your Man???: ‘Stand by your pan,'” Appy says. “If you have to leave [the kitchen], turn the heat off [the burner] before you answer the phone or leave the room.”

Electrical
Faulty or deteriorating electrical cords are another top cause of home fires. Cords that become frayed or cracked can send sparks to flammable surfaces and start a fire.

Solution: Cord checkup
Check all of your electrical cords to ensure that they are in good shape, and replace any that are worn out. In addition, “make sure you are not overloading circuits,” Appy says. “It should be one plug per receptacle ??? you don’t want that octopus thing going on.”

Home Maintenance Tips for Summer
Summer brings sunshine, green leaves, and trips to the beach. But the warm, dry season also offers the perfect chance to get some work done around the house. With just a few weekends’ worth of work, these tips can help get your home in tip-top shape and ready for the rest of the year.

Easy Home Fixes in the Summer
When it gets warm, it’s tempting to ditch any housework for the beach or the golf course. Hard as it may be, consider suppressing that urge for a few weekends, because some fairly easy work can improve the state of your home, give it an appearance makeover, and even save you some money.

Keep Your Cool With a Fan
There’s an easy trick to keeping cooler and saving money, and it’s as close as your ceiling fan. Switch the ceiling fan’s blades so the leading edge is higher as the fan turns, so you can feel the breeze from the fan as it rotates. This simple action will push cool air down, enabling you to set the air-conditioning lower and save money on energy.

Clean Your Dryer Vent
Without some maintenance, your dryer could cause a house fire. The U.S. Fire Administration reports nearly 16,000 dryer fires occur annually, which happen largely because dryers’ vents get clogged with lint and dust.

Thankfully, you can avoid any unnecessary dryer-caused danger with a few simple steps.
First, (if your dryer is on an outside wall with a short hose) you’ll need a vent-cleaning brush kit, which can clean your dryer vent tubing more thoroughly than a vacuum cleaner can. Begin by cleaning the dryer’s lint trap housing with a smaller brush to remove as much lint and dust as possible. Then disconnect the dryer duct from the dryer and the wall for a thorough cleaning. Also use a brush to clean the vent on the outside of the house to keep both ends clean and free of lint.

From the article:

Summer is here! Time to spend your days outside. If you are like me, you will be out gardening. This year I am working on two gardens. The first is my patio garden in which I grow my vegetables in containers & pots. The second is in my parents’ yard which is more of a family effort. I love doing both. Working on my own patio garden means I get to come up with my own garden projects and make it my own. Working with my sister and mother on the yard garden means I get to see their ideas and see our creativity work together.

In this post I put together a few simple garden projects that you can easily do with your own garden, be it a normal yard garden or a patio garden.

Cement Block Planter
All I used was two cement blocks, tape, plastic liner with holes, soil, and flowers. I taped a plastic liner (a bag that held grocery store grapes) inside the holes of one block. Filled the holes with soil. Added these flowers. and Voila! How simple is that?

Antique Containers for a Flower Bed
My mother is a antique collector. She has so many great pieces in the house and in the garden as well. I love using unique containers for veggies and plants a like.
