Redecorate without spending a cent by casting a creative eye on the showroom called home

I love switching things up at home and experimenting with decorating styles, but like most of us, my decorating budget does not allow for purchases made on a whim. Instead of spending money (and cluttering up my home with more stuff), when I want a change I first try to use what I have in a fresh way. From new furniture arrangements and easy DIY makeovers to ideas for creative reuse, there are many ways to update your space that do not require cash. If you are ready for a home makeover without spending a dime, it???s time to shop your house.

Also known as ???use what you have??? decorating, shopping your house entails searching your own home for forgotten treasures and looking at what you already use with fresh eyes. Get started with these three steps:
1. Do a walk-through of your home, exploring every nook and cranny for forgotten items. Note anything you would like to have repaired.

2. Take photographs of everything. It is easier and faster to see what will work where if you can hold up a picture, rather than dragging furniture from room to room.

3. Remember to remove, not just add, items. If a piece of furniture or a decor item has been rubbing you the wrong way, move it out, try it in a different room, paint it or sell it ??? but don???t let it just sit there.

Here are 12 creative ways to kick off your shop-your-home makeover.

Give an old twin bed new life. An old twin bed frame (or even just the mattresses) languishing in the basement can easily be transformed into a chic daybed with the addition of a pretty coverlet and an armful of pillows. The key to making it look more sofa-like is to cover the mattress with a fabric you would not normally find on a bed. A vintage Moroccan wedding blanket, a heavy linen coverlet or anything with pretty trim would be sublime.

Dress up your walls with dishes. Have a pile of pretty dishes hiding out in a dark cupboard? Bring them out where you can appreciate them by creating a wall display. Try incorporating one larger platter in the center to anchor the arrangement.

Put an unused desk to work. Placed behind a sofa floating in the middle of the room, a desk provides a convenient spot for sorting mail or displaying a few favorite objects. You can also try using a desk as a console table, an entryway organizer or an unconventional bar cart.

Stop before you buy that changing table. Dressers (the long, low type) are usually the perfect height for use as a changing table and have the added bonus of ample storage in the drawers below. Later, simply remove the changing-pad top and fill the drawers with your little one’s clothes instead of diapers.

Cut a table down to size. Before you give away an old table, consider whether you would use it if it were shorter. Kitchen tables, consoles and simple desks can all be shortened to become wonderful coffee tables.

From the article:

More than 110,000 builders, designers, manufacturers, and media professionals descended on Las Vegas last week for the annual unveiling of innovative products, materials, services, and technologies for the home that is Design & Construction Week.

Consumer Reports sent its usual team of editors, market analysts, and product testers to unearth the most compelling remodeling trends from more than 2,500 exhibitors, spread across 1.2 million square feet of convention space. Whether you???re building a new home or remodeling the one you have, here are five key trends to consider this year.

Low Maintenance Meets High Design
The millennial effect is a factor here. In a recent Consumer Reports survey of 18- to 35-year-olds, low maintenance made the list of most desirable home features. Beauty, however, will always rank supreme with homeowners. That???s driving even more interest to quartz countertops, which come in some stunning designs without all the upkeep of marble, granite, and other natural stones. Two favorites from the show: Caesarstone???s marble-inspired Nobel Grey, above, and Cambria???s Roxwell, with its undulating movement of gray dappled with white, black, and charcoal flecks.

Stainless steel is also getting a low-maintenance makeover from several major brands. KitchenAid???s black stainless steel resists fingerprints better than traditional stainless and it???s a softer, warmer finish. GE???s new graphite finish for its Monogram Professional appliances, pictured at top, is made through physical vapor deposition, or PVD, a process that promises exceptional strength and scratch resistance along with a rich luster we haven???t seen before.

Exterior products are getting less fussy, too. If you???re creating a new exterior living space, check out the Trex Pergola, an outdoor structure made from cellular PVC with structural aluminum cores and stainless steel hardware. The easy-to-assemble pergola is available with a motorized canopy, providing instant sun and rain coverage to any deck or patio space.

Virtual Reality Becomes Practical
Let???s say you’re planning a major kitchen remodel. If you???ve done your homework, or you???re working with an experienced designer, you know to come up with a floor plan that promotes good traffic flow. But until you???re actually standing in the space, it???s impossible to know for sure that it works???and by that time it could be too late. Enter the brave new world of virtual reality, which lets you experience your new kitchen (or any room in the house) before the real work gets underway. Lowe???s Holoroom is the most mainstream example, but many smaller companies are coming out of the woodwork, so to speak, and we expect virtual reality to be a major trend in 2016. Watch this Consumer Reports video for more details.

Clever Ways to Save Water
Drought conditions have eased up in some parts of the country, but the market for water-efficient products remains red hot. One of the most innovative show offerings was the AquaBoy Pro II from Aquarius Brands, an atmospheric water generator that produces up to five gallons of purified water, hot or cold, from the air. One caveat: the machine needs the relative humidity to be at least 30 percent, so it might not be an option in some arid regions during the daytime. The AquaBoy Pro II sells for $1,850, with leasing options.

Smart water heaters are another possible source of savings, since they let consumers track their consumption in real time. The Trutankless TR Series smart water, starting at $1,600, incorporates connected capability in a tankless water heater???an inherently efficient piece of equipment, since it only delivers hot water when you need it (unlike traditional water heaters, which maintain a storage tank full of hot water whether you need it or not). The catch with the Trutankless is that it runs on electricity, which is more expensive than gas in most regions. In addition to tracking water usage, the Wi-Fi heater allows users to remotely set the temperature through their smartphone. Rheem and Rinnai, two other water heater manufacturers, also introduced Wi-Fi-enabled models, including both tank and tankless water heaters that run on gas.

In the laundry category, Electrolux???s new Perfect Steam Washer with LuxCare Wash and SmartBoost, which took home the 2016 KBIS Best in Show award, uses an exclusive technology that premixes the water and detergent in a special chamber before the cycle begins, promising a deep clean in all cycles. The new washer also features a 15-minute Fast Wash Cycle, which saves consumers time. Overall, Electrolux says the new washer will save 40 gallons per week, on average, compared with a leading high-efficiency top load washer. We’ll confirm those claims when we get the machine into our labs for testing.

Get White-on-White Just Right
All-white kitchens aren’t going anywhere ??? see: Everybody’s “For the Home” Pinterest boards and oh, everything Joanna Gaines fixes up ??? but there’s a key to keeping the room from looking doctor’s-office sterile: “Use different kinds of textures,” Ford says. “Whether it’s subway tile or a wood grain, linen or cotton, different kinds of textures add warmth and make the room feel cozy.”

Get a Concrete Idea
If marble’s too fussy (or pricey!) for your tastes, try going the other extreme ??? with concrete. “They’re really taking over,” Ford says. “Concrete’s not so expensive, it’s cool, easy, durable. Honestly, it’s like the evolution of butcher block.”

Make Throwback Thursday Every Day
Stainless steel appliances have been the star of the kitchen for years now, and while they still look great in industrial homes, Ford’s been loving Smeg’s updated take on retro appliances. Yup, the white fridge is officially back ??? only with rounded edges and a taller, skinnier appearance. “The iPhone’s brought back white in a big way,” Ford says. “These refrigerators are super glossy, super clean, and cool and modern. They blend in better with white kitchens, too.”

From the article:

Shoe bench.
It???s hard to buckle a Christian Louboutin caged 6-inch stiletto or pull up a thigh-high boot. One needs a seat. And apparently a shoe mirror. And probably an assistant. This is also a good spot for a friend or kiddo to sit while you play fashion show.

A closet annex.
No room for a dream closet or even a small walk-in? Sometimes there just isn???t enough space in the main closet. Why dig around for shoes hidden beneath your hanging pants when you can display them in a built-in in your bedroom?

Top-shelf opportunities.
No matter how small your closet, you???ll want to take advantage of height ??? if you stop at the top rod you may be wasting space.

From the article:

Check off these five to-dos around the house to ensure the loved ones living under your roof are safe, happy and healthy in the year to come.

Test your home’s indoor air quality
As frightening as it sounds, the air you’re breathing indoors could be more dangerous than the air outdoors.

One way to go about testing is to hire a professional to check for specific allergens or chemicals, like radon, asbestos, or mold and other toxic materials. Pros who specialize in a certain type of testing will take a sample and diagnose any problems fairly quickly. Another option for testing is to check for anything and everything in one swoop. The cost to test for a wider range of pollutants is higher, but you???ll check a lot of potential problems off the list before anything becomes an issue.

Be sure your home is insulated properly
According to Energy.gov, unless your home was specially constructed for energy efficiency, you can probably reduce your energy bills by adding more insulation. Insulation provides resistance to heat flow, and the more heat flow resistance your insulation provides, the lower your heating and cooling costs.

To determine if you could be saving, bring in a qualified home energy auditor to assess your home’s insulation. A whole-house energy assessment, also known as a home energy audit, will identify the location and amount of insulation in your home and pinpoint areas in need of air sealing???sealing those spots will also cut costs in the long run.

Once you’ve determined the condition of your existing insulation, you can find the right contractor to add insulation to your home. Remember: Even if you go for more expensive materials and pay a hefty price up front, you’re almost sure to recoup that money thanks to lower energy bills over time.

From the article:

Under the stairs.
This cozy office nook by architect Hugh Jefferson Randolph was created using space stolen from an often wasted spot. As more folks opt to downsize these days, creating an office from an area like this is preferable to adding an entire room dedicated to work.

Making the most of a bump-out or bay.
These nooks are just the right size to nestle in a desk. This bump-out is part of a living room, and interior designer Jennifer Walters wanted to maintain an open, ???non-office-y??? feel under the windows. Using a desk with a glass top and polished metal legs keeps the work space from feeling cluttered or clunky. The wireless printer and fax are hidden in baskets.

Roost Interior Design
In the kitchen. The kitchen is still a popular spot for keeping the home organized, as well as a place to plan menus and charge personal devices. In this colorful kitchen, walnut shelves in the office corner hold cookbooks and art.

Out in the open.
If your office is the command center of your home, tucking it in between rooms makes a lot of sense. It???s easy to pop right over and pay a bill, shoot off an email or keep a schedule organized.

From the article:

When You Walk in the Door . . .
Put everything that comes into your house away immediately. (And, yes, the recycling bin is a viable option for that junk mail.) Keep your on-the-go items???coat, bag, keys, et cetera???in one place. And if you have a second story, always take something that needs to go up every time you walk upstairs.

Your Bedroom, From Morning Till Night
Make your bed every day. No matter what. Do it as soon as you get up, and feel free to ditch your top sheet if that makes life easier. When you get home, immediately hang up items that will be reworn. And keep your closet decluttered. The best way to do this? Give pieces away frequently!

The Dreaded Kitchen
There???s a difference between having a neat house???i.e., everything is straightened???and having a clean house???as in, there aren???t gobs of sticky, anonymous food lingering from days ago. The kitchen, rivaled only by the bathroom, is ground zero for cleanliness. So how best to combat the situation? Make a habit of cleaning as much as possible while you cook, and always do all the dishes after each meal. Clean out (and dry!) your sink at the end of every day. If you have a dishwasher, run it at night and unload the clean dishes before it is time to pop in the next morning???s cereal bowls.

Did You Know That Your Dryer Can Catch on Fire?

Fires can happen in a myriad of different ways, some of them preventable and some of them are not. We owe it to ourselves as homeowners to do what we can to prevent the ones that we can. One of the ones that can be prevented is the ones caused by clogged dryer vents. We found this article with more information that we hope will help.

From the article:

In most homes, the clothes dryer has become an indispensable part of family living. And for families with children, laundry often seems never-ending. But, many families don’t know that clothes dryers can be a leading cause of fires in the home approximately 15,000 every year. At UL, we rigorously inspect, certify and test dryers while they are still in the factory to ensure that safety standards are met. Once you bring them home, a little preventative maintenance can keep them in good working order.

What causes fires?
One of the most common causes of dryer fires is lack of maintenance. When lint traps aren’t cleaned as often as they should be, the resulting build-up in the screen or other areas can cause the dryer to perform poorly, operate at elevated temperatures and possibly overheat ??? with dangerous consequences.

What can you do?
An important safeguard your family can take is to ensure that your dryer has rigid or flexible metal venting and ducting materials to help sustain airflow. This will also reduce operating costs and extend the life of the dryer and clothing due to lower drying temperatures.

Additionally:
-Clean the lint trap before and after drying each load of clothes.
-Don’t forget to clean the back of the dryer where lint can be trapped.
-The interior of the dryer and venting system should be cleaned periodically by qualified service personnel. If you notice the drying time is longer, clean the vent system thoroughly to ensure proper airflow.
-Replace plastic or vinyl exhaust hoses with rigid or flexible metal venting.
