Well, not wrong per se, but there is a better, more efficient way that will make your home cleaner and take less time.

Cookie sheets
Scrubbing with dish soap isn’t going to remove all the baked-on grossness. Make up a mixture of 1/4 cup baking soda and enough hydrogen peroxide to make a nice paste and then rub it all over your cookie sheets and baking pans. Let it sit for a few hours and then rinse off. Like new!

Mattresses
Mattresses are a tough one to clean, but they don’t have to be! First, vacuum your mattress to get rid of any crumbs. Then, sprinkle baking soda to cover the entire top of the mattress. Let it sit for a few hours and then vacuum the baking soda away. That’s it!

Microwave
Stop wasting energy scrubbing away at the nuked-on bits of food in your microwave. Instead, fill a bowl with water and vinegar and microwave on high for at least two minutes. Your microwave will get delightfully steamy and all you’ll have to do is wipe away the grime.

Oven
Do you spend hours upon hours scrubbing your oven clean? Stop it! Instead, make a paste using water and baking soda and spread it all around the inside of your oven. Let it sit overnight, then take a wet rag to wipe out as much of the baking soda mixture as possible. Next, spray some vinegar on the inside of your oven and wipe down with a wet rag. Then turn your oven on low for about 20 minutes to let it dry.

Pretty in Paint

You can paint most cabinet surfaces, but proper prep is key to success. For laminate and melamine finishes, be sure to rough up the surface with 150-grit sandpaper, and apply a good bonding primer before topping it off with the color of your choice.

If you???re going to dive into this DIY project, keep these tips in mind:

– Lighter-colored paints will make your kitchen seem bigger.

– Don???t skip on prep. Thoroughly clean cabinet doors and boxes to remove grease and dried-on gunk; fill holes or nicks with wood putty, then sand.
Sand each coat of paint so your final coat will look perfect.

– Lay doors flat to paint, and wait until each side is completely dry before painting the other side. It will take more time, but you???ll avoid ugly drip marks.

A new study offers some reassuring news for anyone stuck at a desk from 9 to 5.

Sitting for eight hours a day doesn???t seem to raise your risk for dying early, according to a new analysis of previous studies???but only if you get at least an hour of exercise daily.

The results, published this week in the Lancet, may be reassuring for people stuck behind a desk all day, say health experts, but it should also serve as an important reminder: If you have to sit for long periods, your daily workout is vital to your well-being.

The connection between sitting and dying has been studied extensively, and has inspired many scary headlines in the media. And while this research didn???t actually look at any new data, it did combine information from 16 previous studies in a way than hadn???t been done before.

Using this data, researchers were able to directly compare death rates over a certain period of time between people with different levels of sitting time and physical activity. ???Examining the joint effects of these two behaviors is important,??? they wrote, ???because most people engage in both behaviors every day.???

After crunching the numbers, the international team of researchers found that a sedentary lifestyle was indeed associated with an increased risk of death over the next decade. But the more people were active when they weren???t sitting, the more their risk went down. And for people who got the most daily exercise???at least 60 to 75 minutes of moderate physical activity???the increased risk disappeared completely.

In fact, those who sat for at least eight hours a day but were also in the highest exercise group actually had a lower risk of dying than those who sat for four hours or less but who reported the lowest amount of daily exercise (about five minutes a day).

Check to see if your state has a paint recycling program, or if there???s a waste disposal place near your home where you can drop off the cans.

While you???re clearing cans from old home improvement projects, toss out old materials from DIY projects. ???Almost every garage in America has a flimsy aluminum paint tray coated in house paint, with a matching roller in a crumpled grocery bag,??? Gordon says. ???As homeowners, we like to think we???re going to get more than one use out of our paint brushes, trays, and other DIY tools, but it???s more likely we???ll forget and buy these items again anyway. The only reason to save otherwise disposable DIY tools would be if you have a project in mind that you plan to tackle soon.???

Treatment for a scratched wood floor. For minor scratches, crayons will do the trick. Pick a color that matches the flooring, and color in the scratched area. Be sure to stay in the lines; then buff to a shine. A matching permanent marker can camouflage deeper, ugly scratches. Another method: Grind the meat of a walnut or pecan into the scratch. The nut oil will provide a shine that blends with a polyurethane or water-based surface finish.

Pennywise way to unclog a drain. For a balky drain, try dropping three Alka-Seltzer tablets down the sink followed by a cup of white vinegar. After about 15 minutes, you can clear the drain with boiling water. Do not attempt this trick immediately after using a commercial drain opener like Drano or Liquid-Plumr.

You???ve stripped a screw. Now what do you do? Using a hacksaw, cut into the top of the screw to create a new groove for the screwdriver.
