Below you’ll find the answer to all of those questions. Here are the top 5 home organization tips a professional organizer (that’s me!) uses to keep her own house tidy. Let’s get happy, let’s get motivated, let’s get organized!

Everything – absolutely everything – needs a home.
Even the stuff you don’t know what to do with needs a home.

For example, if you’ve got a pile of random small parts and you have no idea what these pieces belong to, then put them in a bin labeled “Small Random Parts” AND put the bin in a part of the house that makes sense to you. If you end up figuring out that something is missing a piece, then you’ll know just where to look.

If they are small toy pieces then perhaps it belongs in your kid’s room or the play room. If they look like pieces to furniture or to the house in some way, perhaps the bin belongs in the garage with the tools and hardware.

Apply this to everything you own. If you’re having trouble figuring out where to house items, start by identifying which room they get used in. Then containerize them and label the container.

Put stuff away daily.
Even if it’s just in the right room, it’s important to return items to their “homes” on a regular basis. This is why it’s so critical to give everything you own an official place to live; it makes putting stuff away so ridiculously easy and quick.

I’ve integrated this practice into my morning routine, so that every day begins with a clean, fresh start. If I’m working from home that day, then the clutter-free environment is much more conducive to being productive. If I’m out for the day, coming home to a tidy house feels so awesome and relaxing.

Now it’s important to say, you don’t need to be running from one end of the house to the other or up and down the stairs until you’re breaking a sweat. You can, for example, simply put things on the stairs that need to be brought up the next time someone passes them.

Active Games

Tricycle Car Wash – With a bundle of PVC pipes and a garden hose, you can transform your driveway into a car wash for tricycle riders. Swimsuits are required for this splashing good time.

Homemade Sprinkler – Take a 2-liter soda bottle and poke holes into it. Attach to a garden hose with a male-to-male adaptor. Let hang or toss over a tree branch. Adjust the sprinkler flow by adjusting the water stream.

You can divide the kids up into teams or they can each compete on their own. If it ends up in a wet sponge fight, then even better. Let the kids get wet and have fun.

Portable Sandbox
Kids love playing in the sand, but going to the beach isn???t always an option. Also, building or buying your own sandbox can get expensive. The good news is that you can easily create your own portable sandbox for very low cost. All you need is a plastic storage box, sand, and sand toys. Drip, Drip, Drench
This game is a fun new way to play ???Duck, Duck, Goose.??? Have your kids sit in a circle and take turns being ???it.??? We spent the last week in Jackson, Wyoming, totally snowed-in and enjoying each other???s company. Trying to keep three boys busy in an ice-cold town with access only to a hotel suite and whatever Amazon Prime will deliver is???interesting. The experience made me realize that there are actually a TON of healthy family activities that can be enacted at the drop of a hat, if you have a few ideas and are open to going with the flow.

As a parent, it can be exhausting to come up with new activities to keep the kiddos entertained. I???ll admit that there was a time or two when I retreated to the bathroom just to get a moment of peace and brainstorm the next time-passer.

A lot was learned, though, and now I have a seemingly-endless reserve of entertainment ideas! You can benefit from my experience. Here???s my list of healthy family activities that are sure to keep the family busy and learning in as much time ??? or as little ??? as you have available.

Tell a never-ending story. Now that our boys are getting older, this has become a favorite pastime for us. A parent sets the scene like, ???Once upon a time, there lived a _______??? and then the kids fill in the blank. Take turns stopping abruptly at pivotal parts of the story and seeing where the next person takes it.
Practice yoga. With a 4-year-old, the downward dog can be downright hilarious.
Play a board game.
Bath time. Not just ANY bath time, though. Bust out the shaving cream and see what funny designs the kids can create on the walls!
Animal charades. Each kid thinks of an animal and acts it out until the other participants guess what it is.
Play Two Truths and a Lie. The old college frat favorite is actually a blast with kids. Each person takes turns saying three statements. Two are true and one is a lie. Everyone else tries to guess what???s real and what???s not.
Indoor bowling. Set up some old water bottles and take turns trying to knock them down with a soft ball.
Bat a balloon back-and-forth. Balloons can come in handy for so many entertaining ideas, we always have some on-hand ??? even in our travel bags.
Play ???memory.??? Show the group a tray full of eight or nine items for 30 seconds. Then, give them 2 minutes to write down as many items as they can remember.
Masking tape bulls-eye. Create a target on the ground with masking tape and have your kids take turns seeing who can roll a small ball or toy car closest to the center.
