If you had to name where America’s biggest homes were, just off the top of your head, where would you pick? Hollywood, maybe. Or New York City, perhaps, or maybe Silicon Valley, where tech entrepreneurs have sprawling mansions.

But that’s not where the very biggest US homes are. The biggest US homes (as measured by the number of rooms) can in fact be found in Tennessee and the Washington, DC area.

The data, compiled on data visualization blog Vizual Statistix, shows that Williamson County, Tennessee and Stafford County, Virginia, have the highest median number of rooms per housing unit, at 7.5 (not counting bathrooms, which the Census doesn’t include in its room counts). Not surprisingly, those counties also have money ??? Williamson County has a median household income that’s more than double that of the entire state of Tennessee’s. Likewise, Stafford County (along with several others in the Washington, DC, area) is one of the highest-income areas in the country.

Not that income has everything to do with it. Kalawao County in Hawaii, once home to a leper colony, is currently home to only 90 people, making it one of the tiniest counties in the nation. Those residents that remain may simply have some very modest dwellings, bringing the county’s median down to 3.1 rooms per home. Likewise, New York County (a.k.a. Manhattan) has the third-smallest number of median rooms, which may simply be a function of having lots of small apartments.

Even if you live in a place with relatively modest homes, you might see houses in your area getting more and more spacious. New American homes are growing larger all the time, both in terms of rooms and square footage. As of the early 1980s, only 18 percent of new single-family American homes had 4 bedrooms or more. Today, it’s 41 percent.

ISRAEL PAVILION (EPCOT)

In 1980, the State of Israel signed a deal to officially become part of Epcot. The proposed Israel Pavilion would have featured a menorah in the center of the courtyard, along with archaeological artifacts from The Jewish Museum in Tel Aviv. But due to possible security issues and boycotts, the Pavilion wasn???t built. Still, Israel was featured in an exhibit at the Millennium Pavilion from 1999 to 2001. It featured a simulator-movie ride called Journey to Jerusalem, a virtual tour of historic holy sites.

ATLANTIS EXPEDITION (DISNEYLAND)

Patrons would use a mechanical arm that extended into the water, so they could get a chance to grab some doubloons and gems. It was based on the animated film Atlantis, but due to its failure at the box office, the ride never came to fruition. In its place now is Finding Nemo???s Submarine Voyage.

INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION ROLLER COASTER (DISNEY???S AMERICA)

Photo courtesy of The Neverland Files Due to be part of Disney’s America, a proposed theme park in Haymarket, Virginia, this roller coaster would have traveled through a turn-of-the-century steel mill. The high point of the ride would have been evading a vat of molten steel. Sadly, the park was never built, and neither was this coaster.

The world is running out of space. Truth be told, the world is running out of a lot of things, but some very simple tweaks to our lifestyle could make the space issue less of an problem. That’s why students at the Savannah College of Art and Design built the SCADpad. It’s tiny. It’s cheap. And it’s actually kind of cool-looking.

At the end of the day, the SCADpad is a student project with all of the creative exploration that entails. Some of it makes great sense. The house is just 8-feet wide and 16-feet long, which is just a little bit smaller than a standard parking space. That unit is relevant, since at least half of America’s 105 million parking spots are empty about half the time. In fact, there are five times more parking space in America than there are cars. Why not fill them with cute but affordable houses?

That’s why students from SCAD designed one that costs about $40,000, complete with all the fun and furnishings. Each of the three SCADpod prototypes includes a small kitchen with an induction stove as well as an organic garden that’s irrigated with a unique greywater filtration and delivery system.

Students also designed the interiors???and you can tell. Some of the design choices (like the vinyl graphic-lined bathroom) look great, while others (like the “interactive fiber walls woven from 40,000 pieces of fabric”) leave a bit to be desired.

The $147 million home at 60 Further Lane in East Hampton once belonged to Christopher H. Browne, of the Tweedy, Browne Company value investment firm, and his partner Andrew Gordon. Browne bought the 18-acre property in 1996 according to the New York Times, but because of a deal he struck allowing the seller (Elizabeth Fondaras, widow of Anastassios Fondaras, a former managing director for Stavros Niarchos???s shipping empire) to stay in the home for several summers, Browne focused his efforts on the grounds for several years. As a result, the 18-acre estate has lavish gardens, which you can see in this New York Times slideshow.

Browne and Gordon tore down the old home and replaced it with a modernist property that Gordon designed. But they had very little time to enjoy the property together. Browne died of a heart attack in 2009. He left most of his estate to Gordon, and a family fight reportedly ensued over the will. Gordon died last fall, and the family began to shop the house around.

Hamptons brokers tell FORBES the sale took place without the aid of a broker.

Children today are surrounded by screen upon screen upon screen: second screens, third screens, screens on our wrists and even our faces. It???s not uncommon to have one in every room. Screen time???especially if you???re talking about touchscreens???is a perplexing issue all modern parents have to confront.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is unequivocal: If your kid is under 2, no screens. For older kids, two hours a day, max. But the AAP doesn???t differentiate between activities; education apps, base-jumping videos, first-person shooters, ebooks, Sesame Street, and The Shining are all thrown into the same bucket. It???s all just screen time.

Trouble is, they???re not all the same. An app that teaches your kid his ABCs isn???t the same as a television cartoon, but the AAP is probably right to be conservative with its advice. ???Researchers know almost nothing about the impact of touchscreen technology on young children,??? says Heather Kirkorian, an assistant professor of human development and family studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who is trying to find some answers. ???Our society is running a large-scale experiment with real children in the real world, and we won???t know the impact, if any, for many years to come.???

Comforting! All the more so because keeping kids away from touchscreens these days is harder than keeping them away from candy. The screens have become one of our cultural platforms???the modern agora where we get our music, movies, books, social interactions, games, and even education.
