There are thousands of legitimate, ethical contractors in business around the country. Unfortunately, there are also scam artists looking to cheat you out of your money who pose as legitimate contractors. These “fly-by-night” operators often show up in communities impacted by natural disasters to try to scam distressed home owners into paying for shoddy repairs or work that they will never show up to perform.

Here are some warning signs to look out for:

– Doesn’t have license and insurance. All professional contractors should be insured and able to show their certificate proving such insurance. Although all states do not require licensing, contractors in states requiring licenses should have it and be able to provide a copy.
– Asks you to sign anything before you’ve hired them. If they want you to sign an “estimate” or “authorization” before you’ve made the decision to hire the contractor, look out. They may be trying to get you to sign what is an actual binding contract.
– Doesn’t write contracts. Professionals have clear contracts that outline the job, process, the cost, and helps clarify how problems will be managed. If you don’t have a contract, you are not protected when something goes wrong. Don’t hire anyone who tells you a contract “won’t be necessary.”
– Requires cash or payment in full before starting the job. Shady contractors demand cash and then run with the money. Many home owners have been stranded by paying in full up front. A deposit towards materials is common, but only pay it once you have a contract signed by both you and the contractor. It’s also suspect you’re asked to pay cash to a salesperson instead of a check or money order to a company.
– Vastly underbids all other contractors. They may have the best price, but that doesn’t guarantee the best work. Such contractors may cut costs on quality, which can end up costing you more when you have to have the substandard work redone.

Here are a few issues you might run into now that winter is coming.

Your Pipes Could Freeze:
Freezing pipes are the first thing people worry about when it comes to their house and ice and snow. When leftover water in your pipes freezes, it expands and can cause your pipes to burst. This can leave you with massive damage to your home and personal items, pricey repair work, and a really inconvenient water situation in the meantime. While most pipes run inside interior walls, in some older homes they run in the exterior walls. If this describes your home, make sure to properly insulate your pipes, as they may not be insulated already. If your sink is on an exterior wall, open the cabinets underneath it. This lets heat in from the house and keep the pipes nice and cozy. If all else fails, you can leave a trickle of water running to prevent any stagnant moisture from turning to ice.

It???s not only indoors pipes you need to worry about. Make sure to remember your spigot and sprinklers! If you don’t have a burst-proof spigot installed, make sure there’s no water hanging out there to freeze and expand. If you???re a snowbird and won???t be home all winter, try picking up a Freeze Sensor. It???ll send an alarm to the monitoring center and your phone when the temperature get to be too low, so you know to head on over and check the pipes.

Your Gutters Could Jump Ship:
Did you get a little lax about cleaning the fall leaves from your gutters? You might want to get out that ladder and do it before it snows again: the weight of the leaves combined with snow and ice can send your gutters crashing to the ground. Debris build-up in gutters can also lead to ice dams. These form when snow melts from your roofs heat, but as the temperature outside is still freezing water from the melting snow takes up residence in your clogged gutters and freezes again. This causes extra heavy blocks of ice and, as the water overflows from the gutters, can make those massive icicles that we all think are so pretty. They???re actually really dangerous???due to their size and weight, they can literally pull your gutters off your house while an unsuspecting person is standing underneath, admiring the snow-sculpture quality of your roof. So stick to the icicle lights instead and clean the gutters while you still have a chance.

Another great way to prevent ice dams is to make sure your roof is properly insulated. This will prevent as much of the snow from melting as possible. Let it melt when it???s actually time.

To decide which belongings will come with you, ask yourself these four essential questions. Start with the first question and continue down the questions until you have a yes or no answer for every one of your belongings.

Will this fit in my new place? When I am working with clients who are getting ready to move, I ask them to show me around their entire home. While we walk, I take detailed notes about the things right off the bat that aren???t going to be moved into the new home. I recommend grabbing a pen and paper and doing the same.

Do I use it? Think about the use and enjoyment you get from each item. You should be able to very easily say, ???Yes, I use it!??? about the items you use the most.

Do I love it? Does it have special meaning? Was it from a special friend or relative? Does it evoke a positive memory or hold significant value? If the answer is yes, assemble a moving box, wrap up your items and place them carefully in the box.

Will I miss it? If you didn???t bring it to your new home, would you miss having it in your life? If the answer is yes, pack it.

Target is my favorite store hands down. I don???t always find their home decor to be super cheap but you can???t beat their clearance prices on decorations. Always go down the back aisle behind the rows so that you see the end-caps of the aisles in each department. These are the spots that you will find frames, art, towels, curtains, bedding, wall hangings, furniture, lamps and trinkets discounted all the time.

I got my curtains & pillows from Target but I used 3 things to get them much cheaper.

1. Cartwheel had an app that was 25% off the price of curtains.

2. I had a cash register coupon for $5 off a $25 home decor purchase.

3. I had received my 5% pharmacy reward shopping day coupon.

4. I used my Red Debit card for 5% off my purchase.

5. The pillows came in a 2 pack for $25.99 on sale + I used a coupon from the Target website.

Hobby Lobby
This isn???t about DIYing your own decor, even though you could at Hobby Lobby. In general Hobby Lobby has some of the nicest home decor I???ve seen and they have it to match every style. I???ve decorated most of my house from my husbands man cave, to my shabby chic office to my son???s toddler room with items found at this store. The beauty is that pretty much anytime you go in there you will find home decor 40-50% off whatever the tag says. If not, they ALWAYS have a 40% off coupon on the website. Here are some things you could easily find at a reasonable cost at Hobby Lobby:

– Decorative knobs for drawers, cabinets and furniture
– Wall hangings and art
– Lamps
– Picture Frames
– Decorative and Storage Baskets
– Furniture

Thrifty Tip– They also regularly clearance home decor at 80-90% off. It???s usually 1-2 whole rows of stuff. Just look for the signs or ask a store employees where you can find those aisles.

About six and a half years ago, I moved in to my now husband, then fiance???s house. Our friends and family know that I haven???t hidden the fact that there were lots of things I was not a fan of in this home. Okay, I flat out complained about all of them, but over time have done a lot of easy swapping of furniture and area rugs as well as some painting. However, one thing has remained is the number one sore spot for me. The guest bathroom. A place I lovingly refer to as ???The Bathroom From H*ll.??? Well??? not anymore.

My biggest roadblock was picking tile. Which seemed like a crucial element in setting the tone for the room. In the past Craig and I had visited tile stores and roamed the aisles of a few different stores and I hated basically every single thing we saw. Too modern, too Tuscan, too just plain ugggly.

Until I saw this gray woodgrain tile on what I thought would be my ???I give up??? tile trip to Home Depot. It was new (so I wasn???t totally losing my mind) and the second I saw it I knew it was the one. Oh, and it was INEXPENSIVE! That never happens. At about $2.40 a square foot we used it for the floor and the inside of the shower for about $300. I asked our amazing contractor to run the tile throughout the floor and up the wall in what would seem like a seamless line with the exception of the tub. Since it???s a small bathroom I thought this would give the effect of making the room seem larger, and it did. I made the awesome decision to use this gorgeous grout color and I???m so glad I did. It???s a light gray which does not show dirt and blends in really well with the tile.

The next hurdle was a vanity. Why is it so incredibly hard to pick a vanity? Seriously, I have no idea. This is a pretty small bathroom so I couldn???t go too crazy, but (after like 30 hours of looking) I wound up with this simple white vanity with a marble top. It has self closing drawers, a big spacious storage cabinet and a nice veins in the marble for about $500. If your space is smaller this one is great as well.

I started out looking at Kohler faucets and didn???t love the less expensive ones. Of course the ones I did like were $800 and up and well that just seemed crazy for a faucet. So when I found this faucet I was super excited and it was $154.

And what pulled the room together and gave it that understated upscale look? The paint. Before we tore it apart this bathroom had a peachy pink tile (ick) and bisque colored walls. Behr actually sent me a couple of gallons of their new Marquee paint in the awesome color Silver City to check out. It was the perfect shade to fall between the gray of the woodgrain tile, the white of the tub, toilet and vanity and work well with the brushed nickel fixtures. It is literally my perfect color.
