Below you’ll find the answer to all of those questions. Here are the top 5 home organization tips a professional organizer (that’s me!) uses to keep her own house tidy. Let’s get happy, let’s get motivated, let’s get organized!

Everything – absolutely everything – needs a home.
Even the stuff you don’t know what to do with needs a home.

For example, if you’ve got a pile of random small parts and you have no idea what these pieces belong to, then put them in a bin labeled “Small Random Parts” AND put the bin in a part of the house that makes sense to you. If you end up figuring out that something is missing a piece, then you’ll know just where to look.

If they are small toy pieces then perhaps it belongs in your kid’s room or the play room. If they look like pieces to furniture or to the house in some way, perhaps the bin belongs in the garage with the tools and hardware.

Apply this to everything you own. If you’re having trouble figuring out where to house items, start by identifying which room they get used in. Then containerize them and label the container.

Put stuff away daily.
Even if it’s just in the right room, it’s important to return items to their “homes” on a regular basis. This is why it’s so critical to give everything you own an official place to live; it makes putting stuff away so ridiculously easy and quick.

I’ve integrated this practice into my morning routine, so that every day begins with a clean, fresh start. If I’m working from home that day, then the clutter-free environment is much more conducive to being productive. If I’m out for the day, coming home to a tidy house feels so awesome and relaxing.

Now it’s important to say, you don’t need to be running from one end of the house to the other or up and down the stairs until you’re breaking a sweat. You can, for example, simply put things on the stairs that need to be brought up the next time someone passes them.

Many of the most popular kitchen photos of 2015 once again were storage-centric. Some trends from the most popular storage solutions of 2014 and 2013 ??? wine bar cabinets, pullouts and integrated cabinet spice racks, for example ??? still reigned. Meanwhile, smart solutions like handy areas for small appliances, extra counter space that can be tucked away and built-in charging stations continued to evolve, leaving homeowners with more workspace and less clutter. As a bonus, the storage solutions added big style points to these great kitchens.

Pantries with barn doors. These clever doors provide a charming architectural element and prevent swinging ones from intruding into the kitchen or a small pantry. In this example, the hefty door pull and pull plate match the scale of the track hardware, and the paint color contrasts nicely with the kitchen.

Wine cabinets. Wineglass and bottle racks are great and handy space-savers, but they can leave you having to dust everything before a party. By organizing them behind cabinet doors, everything stays neat and clean.

Cabinets that extend to the ceiling. You may not ever make it up there, and if so, trust me, the area between the tops of your upper cabinets and the ceiling is probably the dirtiest, dustiest spot in your home. Extending cabinets all the way to the ceiling is cleaner and offers extra storage space.

These upper-uppers are usually an additional row atop the upper cabinets, which have more pleasing proportions than super tall upper cabinets would. They also provide an opportunity to put glass-fronted cabinets up top for displaying items and a lighter look.

Pullout shelves large enough to stash small appliances. Cleared-off counters free up workspace and present a pleasing uncluttered look. But having to bend down and dig around messy lower cabinets makes storing appliances there not worth the hassle. Solutions like this are starting to overtake appliance garages, a favorite from last year.

As Houzz contributor Sam Ferris pointed out, a system like this where heavy items can be accessible at a back-friendly height is good for an aging-in-place strategy.

Cabinet-mounted spice racks. Also a favorite last year, these organizers allow easy access to your herbs and spices, yet keep them hidden and out of the sunlight. Another popular 2015 storage move seen in this photo is a tucked-away microwave. Designers report that homeowners are opting to put microwaves in pantries, specialty cabinets or drawers.

Remove or change things you do not like. Removing the negative is just as important (or even more important than) adding the positive. Have you been living with a wall color, chair or box of mementos that is weighing you down? Make 2015 the year to say goodbye to all of the things in your home that are not serving you.

Take action: Walk through your home with a notepad and start a list of the things you would get rid of right now if you didn???t have to worry about what to do with them. Once you???re finished, sit down with a cup of tea and look over your list as objectively as you can ??? what on the list could you get rid of today? What???s holding you back from letting go of the other items? Get rid of at least one thing on your list today and make a plan to let go of the others.

Don???t let renting stop you from making your home a place where you love to be. Just like buying clothes for the size you are now, it???s important to make the most of your current living situation. There are tons of things that can personalize a rental: removable wallpaper, stick-on picture hooks, area rugs, houseplants and curtains. Decide to stop waiting for a home you own to make the place you are living in now awesome.

Take action: What have you been holding yourself back from doing because you rent? Choose one thing (hanging pictures, buying a new rug) and do it this weekend.

Refuse to buy anything unless you have a specific need or place for it. All of the decluttering in the world can???t make up for simply bringing less stuff into your house. Choose to start a new habit this year of spending more mindfully. Depending on your current shopping habits, this can be challenging to get used to, but it is worth the effort. Each time you find yourself considering a purchase, ask yourself whether you really need the item. If it???s a decor item and not purely functional, bring it home only if you love it and know exactly where you will put it.

Take action: Grab a sticky note and write on it ???Do you need it? Do you know where you???ll put it???? and stick it to the inside of your wallet, where you will see it when you are getting ready to make a purchase. If you tend to shop online, put a sticky note on the computer, too!

Hi everyone! It???s Jill from the Rozy Home! I, too, am a remodelaholic. For the last three years I have been working non-stop on my home. Last year I spent a large amount of time, effort and, yes, money, on my foyer. After all, the foyer is the first thing you see when you enter a home. After adding board and batten (and then converting it to picture frame moulding) I decided that I needed to do something about my poor, naked windows.

For the arches, I had to nail the trim on. The angles/bending made it impossible to glue on. After a day of letting the glue dry completely, I began working on the corner of the arches. For this, I grabbed some old moulding I had in the garage and created a cornice-type piece.

Although I loved the look, the exterior side felt a little unbalanced. My solution? Head back to Lowe???s where I purchased more EverTrue, but this time I bought lattice. I glued it on the exterior edge of the trim and that did it. The trim was balanced!

As far as the cost??? The EverTrue trim was around $2.50 per 10 foot piece and I used about 30 pieces (for doors at window). The lattice was $5.00 per 10 foot piece and I used 10 ??? 15. If memory serves, the total cost was a little over $100. Not bad for trimming out 5 windows and two doors in a room with 15 foot ceilings!
