The dining table, kitchen counters, coffee table, nightstands ??? flat surfaces certainly have a way of attracting clutter. But the piled-high stuff makes it a hassle to use those surfaces ??? to prepare a meal, eat a meal or kick up your feet for movie night. It also makes it harder to find things and just plain looks awful. Still, we keep on piling because it seems easier than putting things where they???re actually meant to go. To have long-term success in keeping the flat surfaces in your home clutter-free, you need to find places for your things that are just as easy and obvious to use as a table. If you???re tired of clearing off the surfaces in your house again and again, only to have them redisappear under piles of who knows what, these 10 strategies should help.

Have a not-flat place for each thing you come home with. When you walk in the door, the natural impulse is to drop everything you???re carrying on the nearest available flat surface. The next time you arrive home, pause and pay attention to what you???re holding: shopping bags, a coat, a bundle of mail, perhaps keys and a phone? Decide where you will put each of these items from now on. Hooks are faster to use than hangers, so if you tend to dump your coat on a chair, choose a hook.

Paper items can be a real problem, so be sure to have a recycling bin near the front door, as well as some sort of quick sorting system for handling important documents. (But keep the categories very broad, or you won???t be as likely to use the system.) If smaller, random items are a problem, consider hanging tote bags on hooks. They???re easy to dump things into and very flexible ??? you can change their contents as needed, from library books and school projects to dry cleaning.

Keep your dining table set. A neatly set table has a clear purpose, and that makes cluttering it up less of a temptation. In the evening after dinner, clean off the table and set out some breakfast things ??? this not only helps encourage a clutter-free table, it makes for a smoother routine in the morning. After breakfast, take a moment to set out a few fresh placemats and cutlery for dinner, and your table will be a much less tempting spot to toss your stuff when you get home in the evening. If you have curious cats who are likely to walk all over your lovely table setting while you???re out, you can set out candles or flowers and perhaps a stack of dishes with a napkin laid across the top to protect it from prying paws.

Designate a bin for your ???worn-once??? clothes. Flat surfaces in the bedroom (the bed, floor, dresser top and chair) tend to become receptacles for articles of clothing you???ve worn once but plan to wear again before laundering. (Sweaters often fall into this category.) Rather than dump these items onto the nearest surface, give them a home. An open-top basket or bin is a good solution because tossing the item there is just as easy as tossing it on a chair. If you have a closet system, clear out one basket or drawer to use for this purpose; otherwise, a second laundry basket can corral the items.

Avoid clutter catchalls. A tray or basket on the coffee table or counter to hold clutter might seem like a smart idea ??? until it???s full and overflowing onto the surface around it. Remember that clutter attracts more clutter, so when a group of random little items (hair ties, loose change, buttons, pens) ends up in one spot, you???re far more likely to add other (larger) random items (stack of mail, shopping bag, pile of dry cleaning) to it. A better practice is to create a spot for each type of item ??? for instance, a jar for coins, a cup for pens, a hook for keys, a tray for mail, and a drawer organizer with little slots for small items like hair ties and stamps. It then becomes easy and satisfying to drop things into their individual containers.

The modern home is always evolving. And to get an idea of what it???s evolving to, look no further than what???s happening within its walls today. With that in mind, we delved into our New This Week series, sifting through Houzz discussions and data to find out what materials, strategies and concepts will be coming to more homes in 2016.

Outdoor fabric used indoors. Outdoor fabrics are becoming increasingly hard to distinguish from traditional indoor fabrics, and many Houzzers are bringing them inside, where their durability makes them perfect for high-traffic dining room and living room furniture.

Colored stainless steel appliances. Black stainless steel is making a buzz on Houzz. In a poll, nearly two-thirds of Houzzers say they would consider the dark alternative to shiny silver metal. Not into the darkness? Head to the light with Whirlpool???s Sunset Bronze finish.

Mixing modern materials in the kitchen. Looking for something a little more lively than white cabinets and granite countertops in your kitchen? Consider mixing several modern materials, finishes and colors. Here, butcher block countertops get broken up with soapstone near the stove and Carrara marble on a nearby baking station. These mix with olive-green cabinets and stainless steel appliances for an eclectic, sophisticated look.

Farmhouse entryways. Stripping away the need for fancy flourishes or decor for decor???s sake, farmhouse style gets at the root of function. That???s why the style makes sense for mudrooms, where simplicity in storage and durability in materials are paramount.

Don???t worry. I???m not going to tell you to throw out your stuff or give it away. And I???m not going to give you advice on how to part with it. Instead, I???m going to give you design tips on how to get it out of sight, quickly and easily. The trick to living without clutter is to make it super easy for you and your family to clean up fast. Follow these tips, and you???ll be amazed at how quickly your home can go from chaotic to calm in no time.

Bathroom. The same rules apply for the bathroom as for the kitchen. Keep your counters clear of stuff. Use a vanity with drawers. Don???t even consider a pedestal sink or a vanity with doors if you tend to be a hoarder. Get the most convenient, easy-to-use storage with drawers. (The drawers can even be organized.)

And don???t stop at vanity storage. Maximize your storage by using your mirror as a medicine cabinet as well. If you don???t like the feel of a bulky medicine cabinet at your sink, recess it into the wall. This can often create even deeper storage.

Bay window. As a designer, I???m always struggling with how to best deal with a bay window when I???m laying out a space. I love this idea of squaring off the wall and using that space as trunk-style storage.

Note: It???s really important that your window storage has locking hardware to keep the lid open. It makes it much easier to clean up faster.

Basement. This is another area that doesn???t always need closed storage, especially if it???s a space dedicated to storage. Stock up on budget racks and store everything you don???t want to part with but don???t actually use. If you apply the Pareto principle, you probably use only 20 percent of your stuff. So that means you can store the other 80 percent.

On the other hand, when remodeling a kitchen you might be more concerned with creating an efficient workspace around a package of new appliances, or perhaps you???re most interested in achieving a specific style, like that white farmhouse kitchen you???ve been dreaming of.

More often than not, a balance needs to be struck between style, functionality and cost. You should start by prioritizing your desires and acknowledging any constraints you face, such as timing, cost and the structural realities of your home.

Design 101
Cabinet designers need to balance two things: style and function.

With garage cabinets, for example, storage and function are probably much more important than style. For a powder room vanity, the function (a place to wash your hands) is easily achieved, and style becomes the more important factor, which is why we see such a wide variety in powder room vanity styles. They all meet the functional criteria, but the look is limited only by the imagination.

In just about all other areas of the home, we see more of a balance between the functionality of the cabinets and the look and feel of the space. A good cabinet designer understands the basic functional requirements for different types of cabinets (media, kitchen, display) and fulfills them with seeming effortlessness while also providing fresh design.

If you???re planning to remodel your bathroom, you want to update the look, increase resale value, add functionality, amenities and storage or a combination of all or some of these. Simple enough.

But the scope of the project depends on a variety factors ??? most of all budget, but also how long you???ve been in the house and how long you plan to stay there. As with most things, there are three levels of bathroom remodeling: good, better and best, says Leslie Molloy, a design consultant at Normandy Remodeling. In this new series, we???ll take you through the planning and execution process for remodeling your main bathroom.

Of course, the costs below are all relative and will depend on a variety of factors, including where you live, how old your home is and what kind of renovations have already been done. Remodeling a bathroom from the 1990s is a lot different than overhauling one built in the 1920s with mud-set floors and galvanized plumbing. ???Older houses likely have had a series of previous remodels that we usually have to peel back the layers and see what???s there,??? says Brad Little, president of Case Remodeling in Charlotte, North Carolina.

A look at three typical cost ranges
The first step is deciding which level of remodeling is right for you. Let???s take a look at three different cost ranges for bathroom remodels and common materials and finishes for each.

The Basic Bathroom Remodel
Often runs from $3,000 (DIY) to $12,000

What you might get: You probably won???t be able to move any plumbing around, but you could replace fixtures and other materials with stock, off-the-shelf products like you???d find in a big-box store.

Mid- to Upper-Range Bathroom Remodel
$10,000 to $35,000

Why the broad range? Well, location, materials, cost of labor and project scope play into it. For example, according to the Houzz Real Cost Finder, the average bathroom remodel in New York costs just over $32,000. In Mississippi it???s just under $14,000.

What you might get: Better fixtures, like a toilet with better flushing capabilities or faucets with better flow. And new features like flooring, a vanity, a sink, lighting, window treatments, hardware, a comfort-height toilet, a 36-inch countertop, a framed mirror that matches the vanity and a recessed medicine chest ??? all of which are slightly better quality than from a big-box store.

Plus, you can make a few more adjustments to the layout. Maybe you???ll put in a slightly smaller bathtub to make way for a slightly larger shower. Maybe you???ll slide a sink down and move the plumbing slightly to add a tall linen cabinet.

The Deluxe Bathroom Remodel
$30,000 to $100,000-plus

This level is also known as a full gut job. Everything will go away, and you???ll put things where you want. You might also punch into an adjacent room for more space or punch out the exterior. The toilet and shower might switch locations, the bathtub might go away and a sauna might come in; all-new high-end fixtures, materials, cabinets, lighting and finishes can be added. The room is likely to be larger. Detailed molding, trimwork and tilework might also be included.

Planning for a Bathroom Remodel
Budget breakdown: Once you establish your budget and start hunting for materials, consider the National Kitchen and Bath Association???s cost breakdown as a guide:
– Design fees: 4 percent
– Installation: 20 percent
– Fixtures: 15 percent
– Cabinetry and hardware: 16 percent
– Countertops: 7 percent
– Lighting and ventilation: 5 percent
– Flooring: 9 percent
– Doors and windows: 4 percent
– Walls and ceilings: 5 percent
– Faucets and plumbing: 14 percent
– Other: 1 percent

Of course, it???s up to you where to spend and where to splurge, but this breakdown is a good starting point. Plus, remember to reserve an additional 10 to 20 percent for unforeseen costs that might come up during construction.

When to remodel: You can do a bathroom remodel pretty much any time of year. The most common time to start is during the winter or spring.

How long it will take: Expect a month or two of planning and picking out materials and finishes. Designer Leslie Molloy says many of her clients usually spend about four to six months doing their own research and figuring out their budget and project scope before contacting a designer. Expect three to eight weeks for construction, depending on the scope.

First step: Figure out which of the three levels of remodeling your project falls into, then start looking at photos of bathrooms to figure out what style, materials and amenities you want. Molloy advises not to get too carried away with planning before reaching out to a designer for help. Professionals can quickly assess your goals and budget to steer you toward what will work for you.

This DIY, wood-fired, outdoor masonry stove can be used four ways: for baking, grilling, cooking, and smoking. Whatever your cooking needs, our outdoor stove/oven/grill/smoker can do it, thanks to interchangeable grill grates and griddle surfaces. If you want to grill steaks or fish, use the grill grate. If you want to bake bread, slide on the steel griddle, stack some bricks on top to retain heat and add the door to hold in the heat. If you want to use the stove top, just slide the metal plate (or griddle) over the top of the firebox.

The MOTHER EARTH NEWS editors and I wanted to design a highly efficient, multi-purpose stove that uses little firewood (or charcoal) and retains heat for baking and cooking. So, we included a thick insulation layer of lightweight perlite/cement between the firebox and surrounding concrete block, and we included a removable door. This design holds the heat in the firebox where it???s needed. (Perlite is the porous white stuff often found in potting soils. You can buy this mined mineral product at garden centers.)

You can build the outdoor oven in stages, a few hours at a time. (You???ll need a few days between some steps.) Check local building codes before you start building. The oven is made from materials you can buy at local hardware or building stores. You may be able to find some of the materials at a salvage yard, too. (See the materials list and the building diagram). Detailed instructions for building the outdoor brick oven are below. Even if you only use it to bake bread, you can save enough money in one year to more than pay for the $300 cost.

Ideally, the stove is built to a comfortable height with concrete countertop space on each side, plus a roof to protect against the elements. We covered the concrete blocks with tile, primarily for aesthetic reasons, but you could apply stucco over the blocks, or just paint them. Having an outdoor sink and storage space nearby is also convenient.

Our outdoor oven requires a fire in the firebox for about 45 minutes to one hour to reach a baking temperature of 450 to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Or, if you want to grill, you can start in less than half an hour. For comparison, it can take about three hours to get a clay earthen oven up to proper baking temperature. That???s a lot of time and firewood expended, which really adds up if you???re using the oven frequently. The firebrick used in our stove reaches cooking temperature more quickly than clay because its higher density makes it more efficient at conducting heat.

Another key design element is the firebox size ??? not too small, not too large, but just right. Properly sized fireboxes heat up quickly, have improved combustion, produce less smoke and stay hotter longer. We measured cookie sheets, bread pans, medium and large roasting pans, canners and baking dishes to arrive at our optimal firebox size of 13 inches wide by 28 inches deep by 13 1/2 inches high.

Bread! Pizza! Barbecue!
If you like to cook, you???ll love this stove. Our favorite cooking technique involves cooking foods in rapid succession at dinnertime. We like to start out with pizza when the oven is about 500 degrees. The pizza bakes in about three minutes. After that, the oven has cooled to 350 to 400 degrees ??? perfect for baking bread. (The temperature of the air in the oven drops momentarily when you open the door, but the brick is still hot and maintains temperature.) Sometimes we throw in some potatoes at this stage if we want baked potatoes. When the bread is done after about an hour, we bake various combinations of veggies (and sometimes dessert). You can bake a lot of food from one firing. And if you want added heat ??? to bake extra loaves of bread, for example ??? just keep a small pile of coals burning in the back of the stove.

Another efficient method is to grill meat and veggies before the baking phase.
Our plan includes a grill grate at midoven height for grilling food closer to the coals. This grill grate adds extra space for baking, almost doubling the capacity of the oven. It also provides space for a tray of water for bread recipes that require steam.

The outdoor oven is a super barbecue! About 95 percent of the smoke goes up the chimney after the fire is going strong, making for a pleasant grilling experience. There are two grilling surfaces (one on top and one at midheight). The heat remains steady with minimal fuss. And if you like more control over the grilling temperature, adjust the damper and add the door.

Oven Smoker
The outdoor oven provides the main requirements for a good smoker: It retains heat well, plus the damper and the vent in the insulated door allow you to control airflow. Use the grill grate (shelf at midheight) for holding food. Keep a small fire going and cook until tender. Unlike many smokers, large chunks of meat (even wild game) can fit easily in this stove.

Canning in Summer
Using the stove for canning keeps extra heat out of your house during some of the hottest times of year when lots of vegetables are ripening. Just close the oven door and put the steel plate on the oven to use the cooktop. You can also use the stove top for saut??ing, stir-frying or anything else you???d use a conventional stove top for.

Setting a canner on the grill instead of the stove top is even more efficient because the fire heats the canner directly instead of transferring heat through the steel plate.

Dutch-Oven Cooking
In addition to all the other cooking options, you can cook in a Dutch oven placed inside the firebox. Dutch-oven cooking is ideal for stews, chili, roasts, certain types of breads and rolls, beans and some desserts. It???s more efficient to use the Dutch oven inside the outdoor oven than outside on a campfire because it requires fewer coals.

Why Not Clay Instead of Brick?
We chose our materials after extensive discussion with several outdoor oven experts, including John Gulland, Kiko Denzer, Carol Mack and John Stuart. I love using earthen materials ??? such as earthen plaster, adobe and earthen floors ??? but an outdoor oven is somewhat vulnerable to the elements. We wanted a durable stove. Our masonry stove should last many years longer than an earth oven. An outdoor earth oven can easily be damaged or destroyed by driving rain, snow, freezing weather or even termites.

The stove requires almost no maintenance. There???s no need to clean grease out of the oven because it will simply burn away next time you use it.

The outdoor oven won instant approval from my mother-in-law. She recognized its practicality and was all smiles.
Cost to build outdoor oven: $300.
Approval from mother-in-law: priceless.

Rolling Laundry Basket Dresser
This rolling laundry basket dresser is a great way to organize the laundry room and save yourself a bit of time when doing laundry. You can presort your clothes in the baskets and it can easily be rolled from room to room for picking up the family???s laundry. It???s easy to build and perfectly holds three laundry baskets so you have space for three different loads. Plus, when you???re not rolling it around, the top could be used for additional storage. If you need someplace to organize those baskets full of dirty laundry, this is a great choice.

Washer and Dryer Pedestals
If you don???t yet have pedestals under your washer and dryer, now is the time to get them. And, you don???t have to pay a small fortune for them, either. You can actually build them yourself. Pedestals are great for storing all sorts of things in the laundry room. You can either build them with drawers or make it a bite easier on yourself and just leave them open. You can keep baskets of laundry or baskets of cleaning and laundry supplies in the cubbies. These are so easy to make and utilize space that you normally wouldn???t think of which is key in keeping things organized.

Slide Out Storage Tower
This slide out tower is actually made for the kitchen but we think it would be a wonderful addition to the laundry room. If you have a bit of space between the washer and dryer, you can just slide this right in there. It???s wide enough to hold most cleaning supplies and you can even keep your laundry detergent, stain fighters and dryer sheets on it, too. Instead of piling those things sky high on a shelf, stick them away in that little bit of wasted space between your laundry room appliances. It has casters so it will slide in and out easily and just think of the organizing that you can do with it.

Sock Saver
You know those mismatched socks that you have laying on the dryer? The ones that you just can never find the mates to? Instead of losing socks and having to forever look for the proper matches, use these neat little sock savers and never lose those socks again. All you need are mesh lingerie bags, enough so that everyone in the family can have one. When they take off their socks, just have them place them into their own little bag. When the bags are full, you can wash them and the best part is, you can wash the bag as well. You just throw the entire bag into the washer and the socks stay inside. You???ll never spend hours hunting down socks again and you can get rid of that mismatched sock pile in the laundry room.
